Welcome to our monthly feature, Ask the Arborist. In this column, we aim to answer your tree and shrub care questions, and address current conditions we are seeing around Denver. Our goal is to help you learn more about how to care for the trees and shrubs on your property, and recognize any potential problems.
Why didn’t my fruit tree flower this spring?
You may be noticing brown and brittle clusters on trees that usually display lush and beautiful flowers this time of year. The same frost that damaged pines and evergreens in April, also stopped the flower blossoms in their tracks. This should not prevent your tree from developing leaves, however.
Should I be concerned?
If your tree normally produces fruit, this may affect your crop this year. Continue to take good care of your trees so they may be fruitful in future seasons.
You will also want to be on the lookout for fire blight. The spring frost created ideal conditions for the spread of this destructive bacterial infection. Watch for blackened leaves, dark cankers, and bacterial ooze.
What can I do?
Fire blight can spread quickly and attract unwanted pests, so it’s important to take action and consult with one of our certified arborists to establish an ongoing treatment plan. Proper trimming must take place at an appropriate time of year to remove damaged branches and avoid the spread of infection.
A preventative maintenance plan is also important to support the long-term health of your tree. Annual fertilization will help maintain healthy growth and give your trees and shrubs the nutrients they need to flourish. Our certified arborists can work with you to identify specific problems and determine the best course of action.
