Ash Tree Maintenance

Main identifiers:

  • Most common species found in Colorado: Purple, green and white ash trees are the most popular ash tree species found in Colorado.
  • Leaf shape and color: Most ash trees have brown buds while others, specifically European ash trees, have black buds. Ash tree leaves look like elongated diamonds and have a well-balanced (pinnately compound) appearance down the limb.
  • Bark texture: Ash trees have a diamond-patterned, slightly raised texture. There are noticeable furrows in mature ash trees while younger trees don’t develop the furrowed appearance for at least a year or two.

Most common diseases and pests:

Ash trees tend to do quite well in the Denver clay-based soil, but they are at increased risk to infestation from the emerald ash borer, banded ash borer, leaf curl aphids, and lilac ash borer. Treating your ash trees to protect against EAB infestation may be the best investment you make this year.
